Communicable Illness Information
Back to school time brings a great deal of excitement and potential. With so many students in close proximity it is also the time when communicable illnesses can spread rapidly. I want to take this opportunity to ask that you assist us to prevent the spread of illness by monitoring your children and emphasizing proper hand-washing practices with them. Hand-washing cannot be emphasized enough, hand-washing is the key to the prevention of the spread of communicable diseases.
This year we have already had many cases of the common cold, flu, strep throat, impetigo, and now a confirmed case of MRSA. We have consulted multiple healthcare professionals for guidance including our nursing staff and the County Health Department as well. We have reviewed all appropriate protocols for cleaning and sanitizing the buildings. Our custodians are diligently following the protocol.
What to look for:
Most staph skin infections, including MRSA, appear as a bump or infected area on the skin that may be: red, swollen, painful, warm to the touch, full of pus or other drainage, accompanied by fever. If your child becomes ill, keep them home until vomiting/diarrhea free for 24 hours and fever free for 24 hours without medication.
